The Elementary Schools
There are presently six elementary schools and three secondary schools with 2,000 students. Although there is free public education, the government is very poor and is unable to provide schools and teachers for all the children. Children must win a lottery to attend school and, even then, classes usually have more than 100 students in each. Burkina Faso has a literacy rate of only 30%, so the children who attend the schools of the ministry are very blessed.
Providing education for the children is an important part of our ministry. Burkina Faso follows the educational pattern of France and begins the education of the children with six years of what is called primary school. From the very beginning the children who speak only their African languages at home must learn to read and write in French, as all education in Burkina Faso is in French.
